Our history

Transfrontier Africa in key dates

Transfrontier Africa was founded in 2006 by Craig Spencer in the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) that form a part of the Greater Kruger National Park.

Established in 2006 by Warden and Conservationist Craig Spencer, the NGO committed itself to safeguarding biodiversity, promoting sustainable practices, and empowering local communities.

Transfrontier Africa originated from a shared vision to tackle growing threats to African ecosystems. Established in 2006 by Warden and Conservationist Craig Spencer, the NGO committed itself to safeguarding biodiversity, promoting sustainable practices, and empowering local communities. The organization's journey began in the Olifants West Nature Reserve within the Greater Kruger area.

Initially, Transfrontier Africa focused on research and reserve management, ensuring lodges adhered to ecological standards. Their goal was to create a reserve supporting biodiversity while fostering sustainable eco-tourism. Early initiatives included phasing out trophy hunting and emphasizing eco-tourism for revenue. Reserve management was and continues to be advised by science to make informed decisions on the best practices for the management of the reserve.

Throughout its existence, Transfrontier Africa collaborated with global universities, NGOs, and organizations to establish conservation best practices. Hosting researchers and students from around the world, the organization contributed to solutions for global flora and fauna protection and community upliftment.

In response to South Africa's rhino poaching crisis, Transfrontier Africa pioneered the all-female Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit in 2013. Comprising local women trained in anti-poaching tactics, wildlife monitoring, and community engagement, the unit challenged stereotypes and empowered women as the frontline defenders of natural heritage. Two years later, the Bushbabies Educational Program was initiated, focusing on conservation and environmental education in local schools.

Expanding beyond Olifants West Nature Reserve, Transfrontier Africa became the Head Warden of Balule Nature Reserve and the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR), implementing wildlife protection practices over a large landscape. Craig served in this role until 2019 whilst maintaining till present the wardenship over Olifants West Nature Reserve.

Post-head wardenship, Transfrontier Africa addressed emerging threats in surrounding areas, establishing the BOCCA reserve together with local farms and partners. Collaborating with neighbouring farms, the reserve aimed to preserve ecosystems for smaller wildlife outside of the Big 5 area.

Transfrontier Africa continues its commitment to developing conservation best practices, local community upliftment, and education. The organization remains an active platform for conservationists and students to conduct research and contribute to environmental management.
