Conservation & Research Program for Volunteers

Conservation & Research Volunteer Program

Volunteer in a Big5 Protected Area

Our volunteer program is based in Olifants West Nature Reserve which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa. We offer a unique opportunity to contribute to conservation efforts and to get involved in valuable research projects, whilst experiencing the African bush and its diverse, amazing wildlife.

Gain a deeper understanding and immerse yourself in a natural environment where humans and wildlife find ways to co-exist.

Support meaningful conservation actions

This volunteering program helps tremendously to keep the reserve running and our wildlife safe! Your efforts and financial contribution enables us to carry out the work that the Research Department does and to assist the reserve management authorities in making informed conservation decisions.

This program offers a unique and incredible experience of the African bush for volunteers as well as qualified or studying students and interns. Living and working at this project means that you gain real exposure to a functioning open wildlife habitat system.

If you are a BSc, MSc OR Ph.D. student and looking for an internship, please have a look at our internship opportunities.

The program is run by a small but dedicated team of researchers who are headed by the warden of the nature reserve. Research forms a big part of the program and contributes to the overall management of the Reserve. Most of your days are likely to be spent out and about in the field giving you the opportunity to see wildlife of interest.

Activities

Most days are spent in the field, assisting with data collection, and reserve maintenance activities, and sometimes office based work. At times we carry out special operations such as darting and giving medical treatment to an injured animal. There may also be opportunities to get involved with the work of the Black Mambas and the Bush Babies. Cleaning chores are part of the package too.

On Mondays we do the weekly town trip and on Sundays we plan an outing we call Sunday Adventures. Read more...
