OUR STORY
Our story began in 2015. Lewyn Maefala, our Project Manager and back then the student of Tswane University of Technology came to Transfrotier Africa to do her practicals in the field. Having met The Black Mambas and having taken part in all their activities, Lewyn saw that the impactful work The Black Mambas did was lacking one essential component: environmental education for the locals from the same communities The Mambas came from. The same year our brand new The Bush Babies Environmental Education Program was born.
The Lesser Bush Baby (Galago moholi) has given the program its unusual name loved by everyone. The program has been approved by the local Department of Education and has been incorporated into the schools' annual curriculum.
In 2019 Lewyn selected, hired and trained 5 Environmental Educators who took upon various projects of The Bush Babies Program to assist, expand and strengthen its presence in the local communities. In 2020 Maseke Tribal Authorities granted a land to The Bush Babies Program to build our own Bush Babies Environmental Education Centre where we host Scouts project, Animal Welfare, vegetable garden, and feed the children and engage them in various environmental activities after school.
In 2023 The Bush Babies celebrated 8 years.
VALUES
If we are to succeed in preserving our natural heritage, we need to work with people.
These days classroom education is not enough. Highly practical, hands-on learning by doing forms stronger neuropathways in human brain which is wired for exploration.
Change of behaviour happens when we are consistent in our actions and are aware of the way our actions shape our lives. We encourage our kids to be responsible for both.
Our aim is to nurture the youngest members of our communities through nature. Solid foundation will help them to build a better future for South African wildlife and people.
